Truck Accidents

An accident with a truck, tractor-trailer or smaller, is not like an accident with a big car.  Trucks and the trucking industry are highly regulated by both the federal government and the state government.  So when you have an accident with a big truck, the rules change dramatically and completely from having an accident with another car.

  • All truck accidents should be investigated by both the police and the Department of Transportation or the Public Service Commission.
  • Sometimes, you can request the police officer to notify the Department of Transportation or the Public Service Commission so that a more complete investigation can be performed at the accident scene
  • As in auto accidents, you should look for witnesses to the accident and get their names and phone numbers; if it is possible, take photographs of everything at the accident scene, especially the truck.
  • When taking photographs at the scene of a truck accident, it is important to take pictures of the door of the tractor to capture the "MCI" number or other numbers or names it might contain.
  • When writing down the license plate numbers, remember there is frequently a license tag on the tractor as well as a tag on the trailer; both should be recorded.
  • It is also important to take photographs of the trailer capturing the name of the trailer company as well as any numbers that may appear on the trailer.
  • Of course, always take photographs of the accident scene, and try to get images of any skidmarks or "collision debris".
